The site, which is no longer inhabited by monks, consists of three buildings: the Basilica of St. Peter, the oratory dedicated to St. Benedict, and what was once the monastery, of which only ruins remain.
Two stone portals bear the inscription “Ora et labora” and serve as a reminder of the Benedictine monks’ former presence.

The buildings were part of the Benedictine Abbey of Civate complex, which also included, within the town, the Basilica of San Calocero and the churches of San Nazaro and San Vito.

The impressive cycle of frescoes in the Basilica of San Pietro, which depicts the final Apotheosis of Christ and the Triumph of the Righteous in the style of the Book of Revelation, makes it one of the most important examples of Lombard Romanesque art.

The site is located at an elevation of 630 meters on a grassy plateau on the slopes of Mount Cornizzolo, near where they meet the face of Mount Rai; it can be reached only on foot in less than an hour from the hamlet of Pozzo in the municipality of Civate, either via an easy mule track or via a trail further to the left (west) that winds through a dense forest.

The stunning view stretches across the Brianza region, the Lecco mountains (including the famous Resegone and Monte Barro), and the morainic Lake Annone.
